SEND and Inclusion
Our Inclusion Vision
We aim to ensure that children in our school feel included in school life; feel that they can achieve academically and feel that they belong in school. We aim for our school to be an inclusive environment, which supports and challenges students to achieve their full potential.
If the child or young person also has an impairment or other additional need, we also consider what reasonable adjustments we will make to reduce barriers to learning and participation through:
- Teachers providing an inclusive learning environment that maintains high expectations for all;
- Staff having an excellent understanding of learners’ additional needs;
- Children with additional needs learning alongside their peers;
- Learners receiving high quality inclusive teaching in all their lessons;
- Learners pursuing a broad and balanced curriculum.
Special Educational Needs (SEN)
A child or young person has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them.
What is a learning difficulty or disability?
A child of school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if they:
- have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or
- have a disability which prevents them from making use of resources of a kind generally provided to other children/pupils of the same age in mainstream schools or mainstream post 16 institutions.
Special educational provision
This is educational provision that is additional to or different from that made generally for other children or young people of the same age by mainstream schools.
- Sometimes your child may need extra help in class, but this does not necessarily mean they have SEN.
- The majority of children identified as having SEN can be supported without the need for an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP), this is known as SEN support.
- Class teachers will regularly check on children’s progress and identify any barriers they may have.
- Teachers adapt their teaching to meet individual needs if your child is not making expected progress.
The coordination of learning support and special educational needs within New Milton Junior School is undertaken by our SENDCo, who is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the school's SEND policy, co-ordination of provision for pupils and liaison with parents, staff and external agencies.
If you have any concerns regarding support in school, your child’s progress or well-being, then please speak to either your child’s class teacher or Mr Tom Chappell (SENDCo, Inclusion Leader and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL)) to discuss your concerns. Mr Chappell is contactable via the school office (01425 614633) or email: t.chappell@nmjs.hants.sch.uk
